Greenwashing

Promo products & Greenwashing – don’t get hung out to dry!

Are your promotional products putting you at risk of legal action?

Sounds a bit dramatic, doesn’t it…..?

But, every week the ACCC is on the lookout for businesses who are making false/misleading claims about the products they sell and the way they are promoted.

It’s called Greenwashing…and it’s an easy mistake to make.

If major companies like Woolworths and Coca Cola, who have big divisions and in-depth policies devoted to making sure they are doing ‘the right thing’ are getting called out for Greenwashing, chances are it can happen to any of us.

So, what can you do to ensure your business stays on the right side of the law?

Take time to be vigilant when it comes to overblown promises. If you are making a claim that a product is ‘certified organic’ or ‘made from recycled materials’ ask your supplier to clarify the details.

Better still? Work with a promotional supplier who has experience in helping their clients get the balance right.

Quick example.

Biodegradable packaging sounds like a good thing right?

Problem is, whilst the packaging might be biodegradable, the process to biodegrade most packaging within the conditions/time frame required is not fully developed in Australia.

So, whilst it sounds good…it might just be an empty claim.

And one that could prove costly…..

Same goes for some of the promotional products that make claims to be ‘eco-friendly’, ‘sustainable’ or ‘recyclable’. This ACCC fact sheet explains it well.

Here at Inck, we have always enjoyed the concept of under promising and over delivering.
When it comes to Greenwashing and Promotional Merchandise, we feel that’s a pretty good way to approach it.

Feel free to get in touch if this is something your business needs help navigating.
